Arrow's theorem and max-star transitivity

چکیده
In the literature on social choice with fuzzy preferences, a central question is how to represent the transitivity of a fuzzy binary relation. Arguably the most general way of doing this is to assume a form of transitivity called max-star transitivity. The star operator in this formulation is commonly taken to be a triangular norm. The familiar max-min transitivity condition is a member of this family, but there are in nitely many others. Restricting attention to fuzzy aggregation rules that satisfy counterparts of unanimity and independence of irrelevant alternatives, we characterise the set of max-star transitive relations that permit preference aggregation to be non-dictatorial. This set contains all and only those triangular norms that contain a zero divisor.

متن کاملArrow's Impossibility Theorem Without Unanimity
Arrow’s Impossibility Theorem states that any constitution which satisfies Transitivity, Independence of Irrelevant Alternatives (IIA) and Unanimity is a dictatorship. Wilson derived properties of constitutions satisfying Transitivity and IIA for unrestricted domains where ties are allowed. In this paper we consider the case where only strict preferences are allowed. In this case we derive a ne...
متن کاملComplete characterization of functions satisfying the conditions of Arrow's theorem
Arrow’s theorem implies that a social welfare function satisfying Transitivity, the Weak Pareto Principle (Unanimity) and Independence of Irrelevant Alternatives (IIA) must be dictatorial. When non-strict preferences are also allowed, a dictatorial social welfare function is defined as a function for which there exists a single voter whose strict preferences are followed. This definition allows...
متن کاملArrow’s Social Ordering as Moral Obligation
This paper aimed to prove that Arrow's Theorem is meant not only to formulate a social decision process but also to clarify moral rules or a " modus vivendi " in an objective, scientific way. In order to achieve this aim, the paper traced the theoretical development of Arrow's theory through a look at the argument between Arrow and (among others) Bergson and Little.
متن کاملArrow ' s Theorem with a Fixed Feasible Alternative *
Arrow's Theorem, in its social choice function formulation, assumes that all nonempty finite subsets of the universal set of alternatives is potentially a feasible set. We demonstrate that the axioms in Arrow's Theorem, with weak Pareto strengthened to strong Pareto, are consistent if it is assumed that there is a prespecified alternative which is in every feasible set. We further show that if ...
